"BGK 596" 2018-2019 Fall Seminars

Speaker: Yücel Aydın
Date: 13-12-2018
Time: 10:30-11:30

Abstract:  Most of the authentication schemes include one claimer and one verifier. But this conventional method is not applicable for mobile, resource and computational limited environments as Internet of Things (IoT). If n participants in a communication want to authenticate each other, conventional one-to-one authentication scheme will be used (n-1) times. Many-to-many authentication schemes are getting proposed by scientists nowadays in order to authenticate n participants at once.

In seminar, the authentication algorithms and cryptographic fundamentals used in studies will be presented. Conventional authentication schemes and the use of Elliptic Curve, Pairing-based Cryptography in Group Authentication will be presented in the first part of the seminar.   Shamir Secret Sharing, Harn proposal for synchronous and asynchronous communications and Chien proposal developed against Harn algorithms will be explained later.

Abstract

Shamir’s Secret Sharing Algorithm is a form of secret sharing, where a secret is divided into parts, giving each participant its own unique part. To gain the original secret, a minimum number of parts, in other words, the threshold is required. What are the basic terms of this algorithm, how it works, how share computation and secret reconstruction are done, and also how can it be used in the implementation of Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) will be main goals of our work.

Abstract

The first generation of blockchain stems from the Bitcoin blockchain, a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that has gone from Slashdot miscellanea to a mainstream topic. But over the past years it has been evolving fast from the original Bitcoin protocol, and popular discussion on mainstream media recently is often to separate blockchain technology from Bitcoin. This week we will discuss the past, present and future of blockchain technology.

12.10.2018 Friday - "BodyNet: Volumetric Inference of 3D Human Body Shapes" Seminar

Speaker Gül Varol
Date October 12th, 2018(Friday)
Time 14:30
Location Faculty of Computer and Informatics, Computer Lab. (4305)

Abstract
Human shape estimation is an important task for video editing, animation and fashion industry. Predicting 3D human bodyshape from natural images, however, is highly challenging due to factors such as variation in human bodies, clothing and viewpoint. We propose BodyNet, an end-to-end trainable neural network for direct inference of volumetric body shape from a single image. First, I will present our recently released SURREAL dataset that consists of synthetic images of people whose 3D annotations are automatically collected. Then, I will show the advantages of the BodyNet components: (i) a volumetric 3D loss, (ii) a multi-view re-projection loss, and (iii) intermediate supervision of 2D pose, 2D body part segmentation, and 3D pose. Our results and the dataset open up new possibilities for advancing person analysis using cheap and large-scale synthetic data.

Title: "From Pool-Tap Problems to Markov Fluid Queues: Bir İnsanın Havuzla Ne Problemi Olabilir ki?"

Abstract: Pool-tap problems are among the many types of word problems that are covered in elementary schools to teach basic algebra. They basically concern the filling/emptying time of a pool that has one or multiple taps conveying water into or out of the pool. This kind of problems are used in many countries, including Turkey, in nation-wide examinations, and have been criticized for posing for an unrealistic and artificial real-world example. They have even been mocked by prominent Turkish comedian Cem Yılmaz, with the punch line in the title. In this talk, I will show that with little modification involving random elements, pool-tap problems can be formulated as the so-called Markov Fluid Queues. I will then proceed to the applications that involve Markov Fluid Queues which I have studied extensively. I will demonstrate that advanced versions of pool-tap problems can be used in diverse fields, ranging from optical networks to risk theory and actuarial science. In addition to presenting my research, I hope to enliven curiosity and a fresh approach in the graduate students in attendance that would go beyond the simple mind-set of "Bu bilgi hayatta ne işimize yarayacak?".

"Parameterized Burrows Wheeler Transformation" seminar will be given by Assist. Prof. Sharma V. Thankachan on 3rd January 14:00 at Room 410

Time: 14:00
Location: Informatics Institute, Room 410

Abstract

The fields of succinct data structures and compressed text indexing have seen quite a bit of progress over the last two decades. An important achievement, primarily using techniques based on the Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT), was obtaining the full functionality of the suffix tree in the optimal number of bits. A crucial property that allows the use of BWT for designing compressed indexes is order-preserving suffix links. Specifically, the relative order between two suffixes in the subtree of an internal node is same as that of the suffixes obtained by truncating the first character of the two suffixes. Unfortunately, in many variants of the text-indexing problem, for e.g., parameterized pattern matching, 2D pattern matching, and order-isomorphic pattern matching, this property does not hold. Consequently, the compressed indexes based on BWT do not directly apply. Furthermore, a compressed index for any of these variants has been elusive throughout the advancement of the field of succinct data structures. We achieve a positive breakthrough on one such problem, namely the Parameterized Pattern Matching problem.

Discovery of Novel Inhibitors for Alzheimer’s Disease Using Computational Approaches

Assist. Prof. Dr. Sefer BADAY

Abstract:

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common form of dementia that causes serious mental and behavioral problems. This talk will be about developing novel compounds that could potentially cure or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It has been shown that enzymatic removal of Chondroitin sulphates in the perineuronal nets reactivates neuronal plasticity in the central nervous system, benefitting conditions such as functional recovery after spinal cord injury and memory retention in Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, we aimed at designing small molecules to inhibit Sulfotransferase enzyme (CHST11) producing Chondroitin sulphates.

Unfortunately, the three-dimensional structure of the CHST11 has not been solved yet. Hence, we built a model structure of sulfotransferase enzyme and refined the structure using Molecular Dynamics simulations. Based the refined protein structure, novel inhibitors have been predicted using structure-based computational methods. In addition to structure-based methods, we employed pharmacophore and ligand-based methods to discover inhibitor molecules. This talk aims to be a good example for application of informatics methods to a biological problem.

Title: Lambda Coordinates for Binary Elliptic Curves

Abstract

Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) is a public-key cryptography based on elliptic curves over finite fields and can be used for encryption, digital signature and random-number generation. According to researches ECC can provide the same level of security using smaller keys than traditional cryptosystems such as RSA. With the benefit of using smaller keys, ECC can deliver faster encryption on smaller hardware.

Lambda-coordinates is a new system for representing points on elliptic curves which is developed for reducing the cost of scalar multiplication to provide important speedups which enable even faster cryptography.
